PS is a good option. Don't dismiss it so readily. There's also Perspectives on Politics, another good APSA journal (both are better/more interesting than APSR, in my opinion). There are also some niche journals on specific issues (heck, I just saw an advert for a Cambridge-published journal focused entirely on the 60s) out there that might work. Not sure of your topic, but a "thought" piece might fit in something like "Government & Opposition". Also, try some sociology journals.

Where would you try to send a paper that combines a discussion from political theory with one from political psychology (i.e. not to a proper PT journal)? I've heard Journal of Theoretical Politics used to publish that kind of close to cross-disciplinary stuff, but now it seems mostly oriented at game theory. And yes, I know PS is an option, but I'd like to aim higher.

One trick about fit - well, not a trick so much as something that's just common sense -is to frame the paper in relation to debates in the wider literature. So if you want to publish in Political Science journals, the paper should speak to and be framed in relation to other studies and debates within a particular area of political science. If you're going to send it to a sociology journal, you'll need to frame it in relation to debates and literature in sociology. If you don't do that, it's much less likely to look like something that "fits" the journal, or that would be of interest to the journal's audience.

Journals do receive articles from "nobodies" - grad students, people outside the academy. If they are good articles, and the articles fit with the kind of thing the journal usually publishes, then they'll send them out for (blind) peer review. Your nobody status shouldn't matter. The quality and fit of the paper will.

I don't even understand your description of your topic, but if you've seen something similar in the APSR, just send it there. It's a blind review process, so it shouldn't matter that nobody knows who you are.

I'm just finishing off a paper on cross-cultural mass values, their individual level dimensionality and effects on left-right positioning etc. But which journal should I send it to? I've been told I can and should aim as high as APSR, but question is if they would even consider work on these matters, if it comes from a nobody. I hardly ever see any such studies in APSR, except of course for the big names.
Alternatively, I could aim for purely sociological journals like AJS or ASR. But would that count on the CV of a political scientist? And they might feel my work is not sociological enough...Any advice is very welcome!
