I second the recommendation above. You should express interest in the job (either for this year or for sometime in the future) if you really are interested in the job. Something like... "I don't want to put you in an awkward position, but I was wondering if you could give me any info on your search in X. I'm on the job market this year and that is a position I am particularly interested in." I would be happy to pass on info if someone asked me.

I think it is perfectly fine to say "I don't where you are in your search, but I just want to reiterate that I'm extremely interested. Now that that's my chest, how's your conference going?" And just leave it at that--offer information and move on. Truth is if you are on the same panel with somebody over and over then the dept may see you as too close as to what they already have.

I don't agree. I'm really surprised how thin skinned we can be or think others are.

We're all professionals and all adults. Nothing wrong with asking. Just be ready if the answer is "your folder is no longer under consideration." If that is the response, no more questions, just say "Well best of luck in the search."

You never know, their search may have cratered, your folder may have been overlooked, you may be applying again there next year. Ask. Just do it courteously.

Other than satisfying your curiosity, which is natural, having that knowledge does absolutely nothing for you. Additionally, it could lead to some awkward moments if you're not one of the people that they're seriously looking at. Don't put someone in that position. Just let it go and engage in the normal conversation. If he wants you to know, he'll tell you.

I will be on a panel with a faculty member from a prospective employer. We've been on other panels together before, and we're friendly acquaintences. Is it acceptable to ask him how their search is going/timeline, etc?
