I didn't think I was being clever OR subtle. And I certainly wasn't attacking Allen, who is indeed the world-class scholar I referred to. Taylor, on the other hand, has written some really poorly thought-through stuff.

Watercolour is just finding a clever, subtle way to attack Danielle Allen. A lot of people jealous of her success have done that on these boards in the past. I assume the other person he's thinking of is Taylor at Davis. Both Taylor and Davis are very impressive, albeit in different ways--to suggest one of them is a "hack" is bs, pure and simple.

Allen's first Ph.D. is from Cambridge, which is a two-year-dissertation-only affair. Plenty of folks in lots of fields have a (short-matriculation) European Ph.D. and a (long-matriculation) American Ph.D. What's unusual is to have two American Ph.D.'s, as Badredine Arfi (Florida) apparently does.

Does the OP mean two Ph.D.'s of any description or two American Ph.D.'s?

The latter is Danielle Allen? I think she is brilliant. She has a job at the Institute for Higher Studies where there is the heavy teaching load of 0-0.

I've actually been considering treating the pursuit of a second PhD as a job. Sure, the pay is bad, but it puts the food on your family.

OP: I can't imagine getting another PhD in a completely different field. I would imagine the success rate of obtaining another PhD approaches 0. Don't bother.

From the Badredine Arfi paper cited above:

if you already have the PhD, there's absolutely no reason to get another

but if you're an advanced ABD, well...some people are just perpetual student types....others realize too late they hate political science

if you're the former, go for it. You clearly don't mind living on a stipend.

but if you're the latter, cut your losses and get a real-world job. You probably have an MA, and should be able to get a consulting or private-sector employment...just be prepared for questions about why you dropped out...
