I just read Pinello's CV. He spent three years at the University of New Orleans right out of graduate school at Yale. He published no book or peer-reviewed article during that time He was an assistant professor from 1988-91 at U. New Orleans, yet did not receive his PhD until 1991.

My supposition is that he was denied at the third year renewal due to no publications and not finishing his PhD dissertation in three years on the tenure track, or he left because he was going to be denied tenure. At that time, UNO had goals of being a 2nd-tier research school.

It would not surprise me if he has a personal axe to grind against New Orleans given his time there. Is New Orleans's laws really the problem, or was this Yale grad thinking he was underplaced back in 1988 when in fact he was overplaced led to this boycott?

I favor same sex marriage, but realize New Orleans is one of the few gay-friendly places in the southeast U.S. I also realize that no boycott of other cities/states with similar laws has taken place.

The question is: why not allow 3 men an 5 women marry as a unit?
or why not 3 straight men? or 3 lesbians and 2 straight men?

what is magical about the number "2"?

and why should the state tell me what 'love' is? what if I wanna marry my straight best buddy, and I am straight too?

Actually, if you read the text of the boycott, it has nothing to do with changing APSA's siting policy. So none of the signatories are boycotting for that reason alone. They signed a boycott based on gay policy in Louisiana.

Piniello has a personal vendetta against NOLA. He once lived there. He hasn't lifted a finger to limit political science activities occurring in any other place (including those whose same-sex marriage laws are identical to NOLA).

This boycott is about Dan and NOLA. Beyond that, it represents a coalition between the perpetually disgruntled and the uninformed.

^All due respect to Fettweis et al, the arguments here about ISA and the New Orleans HRC re beside the point. The boycott was of APSA (and their siting policy), not New Orleans. That said, Pinello is clearly the wrong guy to run such a thing.

Uh, no, the boycott always was, and is, all about New Orleans. No other location was ever discussed. The siting policy that led to NOLA was in place for several years previous to NOLA's selection. Not sure why you feel compelled to make things up.

Just came across this or I would have responded to Zoinks months ago.

It is true that I signed the boycott, but now plan to attend in APSA in NO (and attended ISA).

I can't speak for others, but in my case the change in my position came from learning more about the issue. I am generally a strong supporter of LGBT rights and signed the petition as an expression of that support. After joining the APSA Council and learning more about the positions taken by local LGBT groups on the issue and learning more about APSA's response to the boycott and its siting policy (which you can check out here http://www.apsanet.org/content_73503.cfm), I decided that a boycott was not the most appropriate way to support LGBT rights in this case. As a result, I decided to attend APSA and removed my name from the boycott list. If you check Dan Pinello's link above, you will see that my name is no longer on the boycott list.

Maybe that means I learned something, or maybe that makes me a "flip-flopper" on this issue (in the proud tradition of Mitt Romney and John Kerry), but at least I don't have to run for reelection!

^ Many, many folks who weren't going to go to APSA. Think Miami, etc.

Also, some folks who went to ISA in NOLA a year or two ago. I guess the weather isn't as unpleasant in winter. And it's ISA, so that's a fun conference!
