These days of budget pressures, it is in a depts interest to fill these lines before the end of the fiscal year. You never know if you would be forced to freeze it, or forfeit it altogether.

^^Why not?

It's easy to eliminate most files very quickly, especially for R1 positions. There's rarely more than a couple dozen candidates you'd want to seriously consider. If the committee members are working quickly and on the same page, and the deans office isn't putting up roadblocks to a quick search, there's no reason you can't get some flyouts scheduled in a few weeks.

^ There are plenty of good people out there in most fields, including APs looking to move. Deep pool with plenty of tenurable quality applicants, all the way through May. No need to waste time with an extra search.

So why not post it as a 1-year replacement? If you're scrambling at the last minute in spring to replace a departing colleague, it makes little sense to rush through it and potentially get stuck with someone who either can't make tenure or won't stay. Why not just do a 1-year VAP, then run a stronger search in early fall?

A rushed search implies either desperation or simply going through the legal motions to hire a friend from the ol' boys' network. Neither seems like an optimal long-term strategy.

^I would agree with this if the job was posted in, say, October. I'm not convinced a spring search that takes a month will yield a better pool than a spring search that takes a week or two.

Most searches I've been on have 100 or more files come in. If you only start with 10 it's easy. Not if it's a real honest search. Of course, looking at the files after a week is a great way to keep the applicant pool small. But that's a short term gain for a long term loss. Our standard has always been a month after posting for a first cut, then another week to settle on the final 3-4 for fly outs. Our first interviews are about two months after the initial posting. Better to do things deliberately than rushed. IMO.
