So I've been collecting positions to apply to over the last 6 weeks or so, and I was finally going to start applying to a few this morning. I poured myself a cup of coffee and I pulled out my spreadsheet and set aside about 5 positions with the closest deadlines. And lo and behold, the first 2 I looked at appear to have been withdrawn already. They were supposed to be online applications, but now they have just vanished from their respective university websites. WTF? Have these lines been pulled already?

My guess is yes. I think that if the GOP re-takes either the House or the Senate, a lot of less quantitatively-oriented and more ideological profs in the discipline will start blaming "backlash" by whites against having a black president. Cynthia Tucker of the AJC isn't a political scientist but don't be shocked if you hear some political scientists take this one and run with it:

APSA's impending decision to move the annual meeting from SF again reminds us that the APSA council is not entirely an empty forum for paper-pushing and nest-feathering. The Perestroika! movement nominates an alternative slate every year now, and they do relatively well. But it's clear that the official APSA slate and the Perestroika! slate both have the same PC ethos and pursue their personal politics with association money. Therefore, the vast majority of us who do not support this kind of activity need an alternative slate to be nominated. The key decision is made at the agenda setting stage.

We need to strategize about organizations that have the presence to get a nominated slate together. Polmeth? The political networks association? Other ideas?

Whither Perestroika? Was s/he ever unmasked? Do they still have APSA receptions, and is their email list still up and running? Or did they prematurely declare victory and fold when PoPs dethroned the APSR, when they got someone elected to the APSA board, or when Monroe’s book came out? Is there no other organized group of humanist scholars who contests the continued quantification (and formalization) of the discipline?

I'm a fairly new PhD student, and a lot of emphasis is placed on the subfields you choose for your generals, the courses you take, etc. Does any of this really matter on the job market, or is it primarily based on your disseration/research?

For instance, if I'm an IR person, is there any job-related benefit to taking comparative classes or the comparative comp exam as well?

This in the next APSR: "In their article in the February 2010 issue of APSR, Jens Hainmueller and Michael J. Hiscox (2010) asserted that they had “conducted a unique survey experiment that, for the first time, explicitly and separately examine[d] individuals’ attitudes toward highly skilled and low-skilled immigrants.” That claim was in error. A prior survey experiment, also published in the American Political Science Review, in February 2004, examined attitudes toward highly skilled and low-skilled immigrants in the Netherlands and assigned respondents randomly to alternative questions (Sniderman, Hagendoorn, and Prior 2004)."

My question: with two authors, a room full of editors and editorial assistants, and at least three reviewers, how does no one catch this prior to publication? It's not like the 2004 piece was in some obscure outlet. Does no one read?
