    Another TT position at UBC:

The Department of Political Science, University of British Columbia (Vancouver) invites applications for a tenure track appointment, effective 1 July 2010, at the rank of Assistant Professor in Asian politics, with demonstrated expertise in the study of China, South Asia, or Southeast Asia. Scholars whose research focuses on Asian politics in broader comparative perspective are also encouraged to apply. All candidates' research should address questions of theoretical importance to comparative politics. Candidates must have a PhD or be near completion and have demonstrated accomplishments in scholarship and a genuine commitment to excellent undergraduate and graduate teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a program of effective teaching, scholarly research leading to publication, and service.

The programs, faculty research interests and general activities of the Department of Political Science are found at www.politics.ubc.ca. The University of British Columbia’s main campus is located in Vancouver, British Columbia, host city for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic games. Vancouver is a vibrant, diverse city whose physical beauty, quality of life and climate routinely rank it as one of the world’s most desirable cities.

The University of British Columbia hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equity. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. The position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Applicants must include a CV, a description of current and future research interests, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and letters from three referees (under separate cover). Applicants should also provide a sample of their ongoing research preferably in the form of published material. Materials must be submitted by 1 October 2009 to: Dr. Allan Tupper, Department of Political Science, C425, 1866 Main Mall, Vancouver, BC, V6T 1Z1.

great! many thanks for posting it here too. but does that mean they are mainly looking for Canadian folks or people based in that country? how likely are they going to obtain "final budgetary approval"? approval from whom--the College Dean, University President, Canadian govt? thanks a bunch again!

    1. Most ads say something like 'pending final budgetary approval' and even if they don't say that, there is _always_ the possibility of funding being pulled. This ad looks no different from most ads I've seen on that front.

    2. If this ad follows the pattern of the UBC IR job ad that came out a while ago, the posting will go up on ejobs a few days after it went out on the CPSA list serve.

    3. Canadian law says you have to give priority to 'qualified' Canadian citizens/permanent residents. However, the top Canadian depts (UBC, Toronto, McGill, perhaps a couple others) seem to have taken the approach that what qualifies you for the job is being the best candidate, which seems like eminently reasonable approach to me. They have hired non-Canadians for most of their jobs in recent years--well, except for Canadian politics positions.

^ It's hard to say because their contracting system is much more flexible that at most other Canadian universities. As a result, it's hard to find solid data on this.

UBC used to have someone teaching China. Did that person leave w/o tenure because of the narrower China focus in research? Given the wording of the ad, are they looking for someone doing a combo of the above areas--say, someone comparing China and India?

I believe that person left for a few reasons-the person wasn't producing and also that person felt that the salary didn't adequately meet the cost of living for the area. This person is now happily living in fly over country.

Vancouver is a really expensive place to live. The median house price is close to $1 million:

in the 1990s Bmore was third in drug-related arrests per 100,000 only to NYC and LA. highest number of HIV and Syphilis infections per capita due to sex-for-drugs issues. baltimore was bad, man.

well, that did not seem to have deterred folks from wanting to work in NYC and LA (at least until now).
