^ Buch, in this case the reasoning is sound. All of the other jobs this person interviewed for -- and there were several others -- have been offered to other candidates. It would take a confluence of events, such as the first choice candidate turning an offer down and Bhavnani being offered the position next, for Bhavnani to not accept UBC.

^Yes, you are right. Sorry. Given your information, your reasoning is sound. But your information is incomplete. Said candidate has more interviews for positions still open than is being reported on the wiki.

^Gee, I hope he does not clog the market for many other second-choicers at those other places. But we gotta respect this kind of earned stardom and star power.

^^ Sounds like Buch might be Bhavnani, who must be trying to create the appearance of market demand for him so that he has some negotiating leverage with UBC. Good luck with that one, Buch.
Next post: A strong denial from Buch that he is Bhavnani. Nevertheless, Buch will decline to actually name any of the alleged departments that might make him an offer.

^come on, unless you are one of the UBC faculty who might disagree with the hiring decision, let's give B a break. If the majority of the UBC committee like B, they would be happy to see him hired at UBC happily (perhaps via negotiation with leverage), rather than sullenly.

Sounds like Patty Cake isn't too pleased with this outcome.

Who cares? Point is an offer is out there and it will soon be either rejected or accepted. If it is accepted, we will all find out pretty quickly who accepted it. If it's rejected, then things could get interesting. But no news for now I'd say.

Any updates here?

Bhavnani got Wisconsin offer and I guess it deciding between UBC and UW.
Looks like both PattyCake and Polisciguy is a jobless ABD have a lot of egg on their faces.

Interesting developments, all.

Any news lately? How's the budget situation in Wisconsin? Any possibility that the UBC offer will move downward on the list? Any possibility of this at Wisconsin? How long will the two schools give for consideration of their competing offers before the other candidates they interviewed also get a crack at the job? 3 months?

Interesting development. Just noticed from Wiki that their offer has been rejected. With Birney already accepting elsewhere, just wondering whether UBC will reopen the search next year. Any insider take?

UBC has gone back to the pool this year...

So, what is the chance that the offer to the Stanford ABD will be actually accepted?
Considering that UBC is the only offer that person has, the chance is close to 100%.
Now that it looks like Bhavnani has accepted the Wisconsin offer and UBC is apparently going back to the pool, I thought it would be good to quote these previous messages.

Looks like Canada's appeal does have limits for American ABDs/PhDs. Anyway, if UBC is going back to this year's pool, have the calls and interviews already started? Hopefully we with degrees from Canadian schools will now have a better shot, at last.

^UBC is not appealing to those with an American PhD. Yet, Asian Expert objects to UBC only hiring those with American degrees. Am I missing something?

I am pretty confident UBC has not gone back to its pool. I somehow doubt they'll do so this year. Easier in so many ways to just search again next year, right?
Anyone with better information?

Sorry to disappoint those hoping for the position to role over: UBC did go back to the pool, interviewed a couple more candidates, and has made an offer. The offer has not yet been accepted or rejected, so I'll be quiet as to the details. Once the offer is decided, I'm sure word will get out.

The word is out: Bohlken (NYU ABD) to UBC
Posted 3 years ago # -
UBC is lucky to get Bohlken. In a normal market year in the US, they wouldn't get her.

Where is Birney going?

LSE?

Watch it, NYU boosters. You're not doing your friend any favors.

So, is this official?: Bohlken (NYU ABD) to UBC
Posted 3 years ago # -
Can anyone confirm?
Posted 3 years ago # -
^^^I have no connection to NYU, and I don't know the person who got the UBC job. I have only read her work, and I think it is wonderful. And well worth a top 10 US placement.

The question is: Can UBC keep her?
