Isn't constructivist theory and oxymoron?
Posted 3 years ago # -
Please ... no ... don't start that one ...
Posted 3 years ago # -
Constructivism AND quant? That doesn't make a whole lotta sense.

Uh, it says "one or more of the following research foci," including constructivism, quant, etc. Imagine that: a department that doesn't have a methodological litmus test, but is just looking for a scholar doing interesting and important work. If only more departments were like them. . .Posted 3 years ago # -
W&M seems like a great place to be. They have a good cadre of IR people and Mitchell Reiss is the Vice Provost for International Affairs and pretty involved with matters at the school, I have heard.

Constructivism and quant go perfectly well together. Jeff Chwieroth at LSE, for example.

Any ideas if this is a job listing with an inside track candidate (at W&M)?
Posted 3 years ago # -
apply anyway, inside track people screw the deal up a lot, if you're into it, just apply, don't try to be all 'strategery' about it

^^ Why does anyone bother to ask this sort of question? The marginal cost of applying to a school is roughly the cost of postage--if your institution doesn't cover it. What would you possibly do differently if someone on a board like this said "yes, there's an inside candidate"?
Posted 3 years ago # -
There is a potential inside candidate in the vicinity, but given the broad parameters of the job description, this doesn't look like an "inside candidate" position.

What about Shellman, is he coming back to academia?
Posted 3 years ago # -
Yes, there is definitely an inside candidate for this one. Sorry folks.

^ Think what you want, but don't come here whining in March when you hear that the job went to the inside candidate.
Posted 3 years ago # -
^What's your source of information? Why so confident?
Posted 3 years ago # -
Really, it's (^^^^) bs. Prospective job candidates should not pay attention to any rumors on this website about insider candidates or searches likely to collapse. If a job looks interesting and you fit the requirements reasonably well, apply.

Exactly. This should be posted as a header on every job thread on this site.

Even an inside candidate might not give a great job talk (and hopefully if you get an interview you do). I have seen enough searches to know that inside and favored candidates do not always get the job. Though this is more complicated with open searches at times.

don't equate "inside candidate" with unanimous choice. At my last position, the chair regularly (5 maybe 6 times)had "inside candidates" - going so far as to tell one candidate that the job was a given before even letting the majority of the department know there was to be interviews - and EVERY time, the chair got rolled.

Wow, as a tenured faculty member at W&M I am very surprised to hear that we have an inside candidate. I cannot wait to meet him or her, s/he sounds great.

Why did the moderators remove a non-descriptive allusion to a matter of public record viz. the question of an "inside candidate" for the job?
Posted 3 years ago # -
^^ I don't know which of my W&M colleagues posted, but I'm also excited to meet this 'inside candidate' of which I have no knowledge.
