Posted 3 years ago # -
all americanists, or any comparativists?
Posted 3 years ago # -
Both have strong quantitative skills. And they are not from Florida State.

follow the rocky creek.Posted 3 years ago # -
Wow, so they're at a DC school.
Also confirmed is that one of the very few people at Merced is a serious tool.
Posted 3 years ago # -
^Let me remind you there are rocky creeks in more than one East Coast city.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Yes indeed... Follow I-95 up north from DC towards the rocky creek.
Posted 3 years ago # -
You can also find rocky creeks south of DC along I-95, can't you?
Posted 3 years ago # -
Is it a good idea to bring in two candidates from the same school?
Posted 3 years ago # -
^^ I'd say go up north. Trust me.

Both candidates have famous advisors, but study opposite sides of the globe.

Why do people care who UC Merced is interviewing?
Posted 3 years ago # -
seriously, does anyone care about this in the least? besides the handful of people (what 4 or 5) who are at merced and are ps - I doubt even the other people in the dept care the cog scis and what not
Posted 3 years ago # -
^why would i care? um, maybe because i want a job.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Are you one of the people interviewing? ^
(BTW - well played on the Santa reference)
Posted 3 years ago # -
^ Please try harder to answer the question. Why would you care who (as opposed to whether) Merced is interviewing?
Posted 3 years ago # -
I'm not the previous poster, but I'll answer, even though I'm sure you've already convinced yourself that my thinking is flawed. I want to evaluate how competitive my file is. If I see people with stronger files getting interviews at schools of a certain level, it's possible that a.) the applicant pool is even deeper than I imagined or b.) that schools are reaching right now. If I see people with equal or weaker files getting interviews, I might consider whether my cover letter or my rec letters might be problematic in some way. Using all this information, I can also update my beliefs regarding whether I will have a TT job next year, whether I will be competitive for VAPs/postdocs, or whether I should seriously be exploring non-academic options. And yes, I'm just curious too.

Have you ever heard of anyone who changed something about their file because they knew the identity of who interviewed at a random place? That would be the stupidest approach yet. You need to tell your advisor of your plan to change something about your file based on who is getting interviews. If you think that's a good strategy, presumably you should do that. Try and see what happens.

^Obviously, the logic was meant to apply to the desire for information in general, not specific information about UC-Merced. Sorry if that had to be spelled out for you.
Posted 3 years ago # -
^ Such bad logic--makes sense you're still in grad school.

Just love the coy bitchiness throughout the thread -- If you know names, spill it and reference your source (i.e., colleague, friend, contact at Merced, etc).

Love the Ernest Shackleton reference. Long live Endurance!
