In terms of background, our lovely Canadian politics job rumours blog recently bit the dust. So perhaps it would be good to try to start up some discussions on this board. It is that time of year after all.

To start off, what is happening with the Canadian politics and IR searches this year? Does anyone know if UTSC has a short-list? What about STM?

I started a thread yesterday about UTSC but no one posted any info. It seems that the open-field position didn't catch the attention of the American market. Strange.

I know. Canadian SCs take their sweet time. Most jobs I applied to in Canada have not started going through applications yet. As a comparison, some of my American friends already have jobs in the U.S.

If things are moving so slowly, I wonder if there are more TT jobs to come. There were two advertised just a few ago (SFX and SMU). Maybe at Concordia or Waterloo? Any intel?

Canada is the armpit of the US. Who would want to work there...

^ You're right. I'd much rather live in the backwoods of the United States than Toronto.

what would you choose--the barren deserts/mountains of the Dakotas vis-a-via the cities of Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal?

^ Not only that. I'd take Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver over all major cities in the U.S. with only a few exceptions.

Could we please stay on target and not fall into the useless “Canada versus USA as a place to thrive” discussion.

I would like to know what is going on for the Saskatchewan job search. The deadline was exactly a month ago.

"Laval is presently interviewing candidates. "

Given the demographic composition of people who frequent this board, this is very useful information.

Well, it is not as useless information for this board as ^ implies. There is one American professor in political science and one Anglo-Canadian professor in economics who landed a job at Laval.
Believe it or not, some people are ready to teach in a second language to fulfill their dream to make it in academia.

i became anallingual in order to get my PhD, not to mention get a job, too. So, yes, it does happen. It stinks, but you'll find it's worth it, in the end. Especially in hindsight.
