This proves that losers are losers no matter which side of the border they are from.

I'm game:
Pickup;
Rubenson;
Koop;
Bodet;
Gidengil's student from McGill on voting and information;
EsselmentPosted 6 months ago # -
I’m actually a bit saddened to see such unkindness. While there may not be an academic job for every doctoral graduate, we are nonetheless very fortunate for attaining such high credentials, and will nonetheless find suitable and satisfactory employment. This display of ingratitude among my peers is quite discouraging.

^^ Oh, you're one of those idiots who thinks only behaviouralists are worth anything.

Harrell got the opportunity to land a job at the UofT twice and she didn't make it.
The other candidate holds a Harvard post doc.
On paper, they are not weak competitors.Posted 6 months ago # -
I guess people are so bitter here, because there are only a few jobs for Canadianists.

Esselment and Koop are hardly behaviouralists. Do people still even use that term?
Posted 6 months ago # -
And half of those people already have jobs, so that's a pointless list.

Time out. When the previous rumor blog went kaput, I was relieved. It had become so petty and immature and, most of all, disturbingly personal. Now we're back to the same crap again with a new victim.
When usernames were required, this board actually seemed to deal in rumors. Now it's just anonymous slander.
If you think someone doesn't deserve a job, sign your name or shut up.

The behavior on display here reflects insecurities and anti-social personality flaws more than simply employment scarcity. I have NEVER met a doctoral graduate who suffered a tragic life. But I have met fully employed academics who are unhappy, not because the job sucks, but because they regard other academics as competitors, enemies, challengers, and not collaborators.

"I have NEVER met a doctoral graduate who suffered a tragic life."
Seriously? You've never met a sessional in his/her fifties?

Harvard post-doc? Kind of like how Ignatieff was a political science professor at Harvard?

Qualification: The only tragedies I've seen are self-inflicted, not caused by a university's search committee's alleged biases or some other dark conspiracy.

People are barking up the wrong tree here. The IR search was mired in cronyism & not the Canadian search.

Details?
Posted 6 months ago # -
^ The details are that ^^ applied for but didn't get the IR job.

St. Mary's seriously has a shortlist? When the f**k were they planning on letting the other applicants know? I'm sick of Canadian departments.
Posted 6 months ago # -
The other candidates will be notified when a contract is signed...
Posted 6 months ago # -
Hopefully that's a joke.

I think we went over this on the last board. Many departments don't send rejection letters to the non-short list because that's what HR departments tell them. Yes, it would be courteous and humane. But it's not always as simple as it might seem.

This is embarrassing.
Posted 6 months ago # -
Quite whining you idiots. You can't find jobs. Deal with it.
Posted 6 months ago # -
Ah, but they most certainly CAN find work. Maybe not in academia, but in government, NGOs, advocacy, consulting, etc. Your PhD training and status empower you to make a really big contribution in this messed-up world. It's a pity much of that energy is squandered on self-centered pursuits. There is a need for a bit of an attitude change, here.
