Are they being serious about the CD? Is it like a test? So that only the really interested parties will burn a cd for them and such?

With budget issues, was it a major misstep for UGA to hire Keith Poole? should they have hired a couple of faculty for the $$ spent on Poole, who is nearing retirement?

Poole's position is private money. No fungibility -- you can't take that money and make it 2.5 junior slots any more than you can put the poopoo back in the butt. (Hint: you can't)

    In case anybody is interested:

As you read in President Adam's e-mail, the state of Georgia is considering significant cuts in higher education. Last week the Georgia General Assembly (Georgia's legislative body) has asked all Georgia universities to come up with $300 million budget cuts on top of the $265 million already proposed at the beginning of the year. This would decrease the entire state funding for Georgia's universities from $1.9 billion to $1.7 billion and state funding for the University of Georgia from $352 million to $292 million.

To adhere to the General Assembly's requests, the University of Georgia has suggested $60 million line item cuts, which can be found on the the PDF files found on this web page:

Supplemental Budget Cut Information from Board of Regents Chancellor
Some of the significant suggested cuts at UGA include:

1,418 layoffs (elimination of ALL non-contract instruction faculty, elimination of 543-filled positions)

Reduce incoming student body by 1,500 (500 fewer first-year students and 1000 transfers)
Elimination of academic programs (Not specified in proposal)

Eliminate 4-H programs around the states
Close 1/2 of UGA's County Extension Offices

Consolidate VP for Public Service & Outreach, the Vinson Institute, The Fanning Institute, and the Georgia Center

    Eliminate Archway Partnership

    Close State Botanical Gardens

    Cut custodial staff by 25%
**Please note that these are only suggested cuts and have not been enacted.***

As you can see with these possible significant and devastating cuts UGA graduate students will be impacted with probably less assistantships and even the elimination of some graduate programs. Currently, it is difficult to say how many and where assistantships will be cut and which programs will be eliminated, but if more specific details are given I will notify you know.

The email is legit. The proposed cuts are in response to the demand by the legislature that the system (and hence each school within the system) DESCRIBE how they would cut a total of $300 million dollars from their budget without raising tuition or fees. UGA's share is about $60 million. The likely outcome is the board of regents will raise tuition/fees to cover some of the costs and some of the proposed cuts will be enacted. Some of the proposed cuts are local (non-contract workers and custodial staff) while others are spread throughout the state (4H, country ag-extension offices). It is my understanding that the legislature can only set budget levels and not pick and choose lines in the budget. Also, the $300 million in additional cuts is on top of the proposal set by the governor. So, it is also possible that the governor will veto the budget. Here's a link to detailed proposals throughout the system http://www.usg.edu/fiscal_affairs/documents/summary_of_reductions.pdf
