   I've found a lot of good information on these pages, but the personal attacks and general tenor of the discussion is absolutely terrible.

   I have no idea if this is something that's going to find any resonance here, but I've created a private google group that some may find useful. Content and posting will only be available to group members. People have to apply for membership by clicking on a link and using a google account. There is no application per se - it's just an email sent to the group administrator (me).

   Above and beyond creating an environment free of the vitriol found here, there seem to be a number of advantages with the google groups. IP addresses and identities of group members stay anonymous (unless you choose to make yourself known). Only google has that data and there's no way for the group administrator to access it. It's possible to create pages so if the group wants to create some sort of knowledge base, that's a resource that can theoretically emerge. Files can also be uploaded and shared.

   PSG - this isn't a challenge or any sort of comment on your moderation or anything of that nature. I think you've done a great job here and I really appreciate all the effort you've put in to it. I'm simply finding that the discussion here doesn't meet my needs as a participant and thought it would be more useful for all of those involved to create something new than continue to go back and forth here.

   For anyone who is interested in being part of this new group, I do ask for your patience until there's a critical mass of people interested in the discussion (if and when that happens). No new community was ever built in a day and I can't imagine this being any different.

   I liked this idea until I got to the indentities and IP addresses will be unknown. How will this be any different?

   I'm the OP.

   The idea for this came from the success of the Foreign Service exam groups on yahoo. The members are all professionals interested in a very specific topic. They're able to post with a consistent identity that isn't their real name and that, combined with a very clear set of norms about what constitutes appropriate posts and what is inappropriate, seems to keep the discussion civil.

   With respect to the quality of the moderating, google groups has all sorts of safeguards in place for moderators to use to make sure the discussion remains civil. Individual members can be banned. The posts of certain members can be queued for moderation. It's a pretty big toolkit.

    OP again. If you can squeeze blood from a stone, I'm more than willing to be schooled in mechanism design.

    We're up to a grand total of 6 members. Considering the group has been active for all of an hour, I'd consider it a good start.

    Since it's less anonymous, I doubt there will be much in terms of job rumors discussed. But a forum for faculty (and others) to seriously discuss some questions about how to maneuver through academia would be VERY useful.

    Oh yeah, I'm sure there are going to be SO MANY faculty over their on your Google group. Unless you are counting people such as StarGazer3 and BJ to be faculty.
