I thought you can't track IPs on the google group...how can they possible out people if everyone creates a fake gmail address?

OP here.
I'd like to correct some of the misinformation circulating on this thread.
Users who join the google group can be as anonymous or as non-anonymous as they'd like. Some people have joined with their real names and others have pseudonyms. Some have emailed me saying that they are faculty members (junior and not so junior) who would appreciate a place to exchange ideas. Others have emailed me saying that they're graduate students sick of the tone on this board.
I've chosen to remain anonymous simply because there is nothing that I have to say and no questions that I have to ask that would in any way be improved by having my real identity associated with them. Like most of you - I am a member of the discipline and take an active interest in the profession. I value intelligent discussion and I am grateful for any opportunity to ask smart people their opinions about career choices, the literature in the field, and so on. I couldn't have those conversations here and so sought to create greener pastures elsewhere.
At the moment it's a small group - 17 members to date. We haven't had a discussion yet. My reading of it is that we're all waiting for that first topic to be posted to see how we'll go from there. It's got a nice junior high school dance feeling to to that we all seem to be simply going with.
Rather than continue to respond to the various conspiracy theories promulgated here, I'd much rather invite those who have questions/concerns/suspicious to simply drop me a line via email (accessible on the group page). I'm more than happy to answer whatever questions come up.

I predict that as soon as they get a critical mass, they will start posting comments on that site that attack people who are not members of their "group." Don't email or even surf there without hiding your IP and other identifying information.

Well considering all of the available proxies I know of will not allow me to even visit the page unless I reveal my IP, I can't get in there to look at the code and see what sort of trackign is going on.
If it is like most google pages then Google analytics is built in and it would be very simple for the group owner to see everyone's IP address. Remember when the IR Rumor Mill was tracking IPs and the owners did not even realize it.
Considering the great lengths that many have gone to in order to out people here (posting dummy links, tiny URLs etc...) It would not suprise me in the least if this was the mother of all honeypots (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeypot_(computing)).

IP tracking isn't the issue. This "Google Group" troll is just the latest in a long series of rogue, spin-off blogs started by individuals disgruntled with the status quo moderators. In my history of following these disgruntled polisci bloggers, there has been the Maxin and Relaxin blog, the REP "hater-free" blog, the AP-CP2 blog, Ellie's unmoderated blog, and now this Google Group guy disgruntled with PSJR.
Just let it pass. Anyone who has watched these renegade blogs knows that they quickly devolve into a small number of trolls attacking a small number of individuals (often their own classmates) Soon people grow bored, and it shuts down. Repeat.

Say what you want about PSJR, at least the mods have been sincere in trying to maintain civility. It's about the best we can expect and far better than the econ alternative.

I've joined the google group and it's fine. I used an anon gmail address I specially created. And even if IP addresses are tracked, I don't use my university network - so you'll just get a list of coffee shop IP addresses in a big major metropolitan city with tons of universities. Big deal.
