I am fretting over the job market even though I am at least 1.5 years from being ready to go on the market. Which subfields will have a larger backlog of candidates due to candidates from 2008-09 and 2009-10 unable to place?

Even without the backlog, there's a long-term trend of oversupply. Good luck.

Take the masters and run. Or stop posting on PSJR and publish.

Political theory. That job market sucked even before the economy went in the crapper. So, the backlog will now have a backlog.

Yeah seriously. "Oh noes, the job market will be rough in a few years!" At least you have time to prep for it. Distinguish yourself early, and if you can't, get out.

Fretting? Over the job market? And you're not out for another year and a half? I'd like to punch you. Don't be silly and get back to work.

The OP is right to fret. Either distinguish yourself or get out now. Only top 10% are getting jobs.

I have to say, I think the best advice probably is 'distinguish yourself early or get out'

    Stay in school kids!

There's plenty of demand for adjuncts and houses, cars, and health insurance are overrated.

I would say 20% will get jobs in the end.

Only top 10% are getting jobs.

Ridiculous. The rate of postings is about 60% of the recent status quo, pretty evenly across subfields. So if you were correct about this, then only 15-20% were getting jobs for most of the last decade. This would be considerably worse than disciplines like English, who have been worse than Poli Sci in PhD production:Placement ratios for a long time.

It's bad, there's no need to exaggerate.

    Troll, troll, troll.

If you were 1.5 years from the market, why would you be worrying about the market across all subfields? You'd care only about the market in *your* subfield and would be asking something stupid like "How will the market be for people who study classic prisoner's dilemmas in China?"

Eventually everyone dies. Should I start worrying about that at age 33?
