agreed. seems a little on the slow side to me. i have a one-year vap. i guess the dominant strategy at this point is to try to turn it into a two-year vap.

So far I count fewer jobs to apply to at this point in time than there were last year (which was a brutal year). It's still too early to...oh who am I kidding? PANIC, bitches, run for your lives!

panic bitches indeed - even miley cyrus (who thinks spelling fuck like fiek is cool or something) - public administration jobs are already up and they normally don't go up until october. as we approach apsa, it's becoming inarguable that the market is as ugly this year as last and the impact will be worse because of the overflow of un-hireds from last year ...

I don't have figures from previous years, but it seems very clear there are fewer postings this year. Very sad.

I have obsessively watched the poli sci job market since 2001. Everyday, every year, I keep track of it. And it is my belief that it looks really bad, even worse than last year. I keep waiting for the big deluge. Yes, I know it may be that states are still trying to figure out their budgets etc, and that has caused the delay. But honestly in my educated opinion, this is going to be disastrous. Plan B had better be in place...

Some departments delay the process because faculty are unable/unwilling to do the committee work over the Summer.

For instance, we have two jobs and I don't expect the first to get posted until late August and the 2nd will be a few weeks after that.

But, then, we're not an R1.

Judicial job and a policy job.

I find the job market awfully depressing. Let's talk about something else.

What to do while job searching? Teach intro classes with 30 students at Small U that pays under 2.5K-3K with no guaranteed parking or office space and act grateful?

Demand side here, regarding the cover letter: The more details the better. It looks bad if the letter is less than 3-5 page long. We want to learn everything about you. In addition to your research and teaching statement we want to know: What motivates you? What are your views on the current world affairs? What do you like doing for fun? Do your interests outside school coincide with those of your future colleagues? What made you enter a graduate school?

I hope you find it useful and good luck with your market!!
