Any recommendations for hostels near the Palmer House?
Ideally, something for less than $50 a day.
Even a park bench to sleep under?

International Student House at U Chicago (not near Palmer House but 30 minutes via metro etc.). It is around $55 a night.
I slept in my car in the Millennium Park Garage a few years ago! Just one night out of three and it was not unbearably terrible with my plush comforter.
Cheapest hotel options are generally deep in the suburbs or near O'Hare. You can take the Blue Line directly into downtown from O'Hare and it runs 24 hours a day!
Why sleep at all? Just dose up on Adderall and caffeine.
There is a hostel only about four blocks from the Palmer House. If you don't mind sharing a room and bathroom, this is a cheap way to go (around $25 per night). I stayed there when I went to Midwest two years ago, and it was okay. If you go to hostwelworld, you can find and book it.
It is the H.I. Chicago on 24 East Congress. It is 7 minutes walking from the palmer house hilton according to google maps. Dorm beds are about $30/night.
People -- seriously. Go on Priceline and enter a bid for $45-$50. You'll get something in the 2-3 star range. March in Chicago is not busy season for hotels, and cabs cost about $5-$8 one way to-from the Palmer House, or you can take the train.
I always use Priceline for conference alternative hotels, and pay about half the conference rate (because I opt to stay in nicer ones).
What do you look like?
I don't know if you consider $75 a night cheap (it's a lot less than the damn conference rate). I got that last Nov. staying on the magnificent mile using Priceline. And that was my first offer! I should have went lower. And if you get lucky and stay more toward Riverwalk, it's within a 15/20 min. walk of the Palmer house. There are probably bus options.
I Pricelined for $80 and got the Essex.
priceline:
four stars going for 100 bucks right now. find a buddy to team up with and you'll be paying c. 50 bucks for a top place within 30 mins walk of Palmer.
There's also a brothel two blocks east of the Palmer above a Korean mini-mart that lets out rooms on an hourly basis. Limit yourself to 2-3 hours a night and you're all good. They even offer complimentary mints when you check-out.
Priceline rooms are often provided with a single king bed so be careful who you bunk with.

not sure about that- I've never any trouble at all getting 2 beds when I checked in (done this literally dozens of time). priceline provides accommodation for two people for each hotel booking, and it would be pretty unreasonable to expect you to bunk together.
I went on Priceline, 2.5 stars @ 60 bucks a night. Wound up at the Inn of Chicago. No complaints here.
I do Hotwire instead of Priceline, but have had similar results. Looking now they have a bunch of O'Hare hotels for $30 a night, though nothing in the neighborhoods around the Palmer House for less than $75. A couple of months ago I got a room at the Travelodge, about a 10 minute walk south of the Palmer House, for $55 a night.
For 60 I got the Hilton in Priceline
I just got a deal on Hotwire, $90 for a 3 star.
Anyone interested in sharing a room, send me a message at at: mpsa2011roommate@yahoo.com. Male PhD student, I'm presenting April 1 (not a Fool's joke).
Thanks for the tips about Priceline, BTW.
4 star for $90 on Priceline. I got the Hyatt Regency Chicago.
good luck to you, Share, but I think you might have to identify yourself to get any responses. I know I wouldn't send an email to an unidentified address.
The IYH in south end of the loop. It's quite nice, breakfast is included in the price, has a bar, and is an easy walk to the PH.

I like how our dues are paying for a free suite and MWPSA is presenting it like a generous gift.
You can stay in my room for free ;)
^ if you blow me
For 60 a night in Priceline I got the Hyatt
Hi guys, I would like to get more recent information on the Priceline bidding. Can you tell me how much you bid (successfully) for downtown Chicago hotels and what you actually got?
$101 a night at the Blackstone Renaissance. The best deal right now is at Hotwire is a 4* in the loop for $94.
Go to betterbidding.com for guidelines and lots of examples of recent successful bids. Pay attention to information on "free rebids." Chicago has enough regions that you get 5 or 6 re-bids.
