I just finisihed re-reading the Harry Potter series, and I'm pretty sure I went to grad school because I thought it was going be like Hogwarts. I'm only slightly kidding. I took the GRE and applied to grad school right after I finished the series the first time around. Please tell me someone else has had a similar experience - unrealistic romanticizing of the academy.

Didn't you know? Political Science is code for "Witchcraft and Sorcery". If not by magic, how else could politicians get away with their shenanigans?

And how could any political scientists make any of their arguments?

I admit I had the same romantic fantasies, fueled in part by Hogwarts. I figure grad school would be about having stimulating conversations in the company of brilliant professors. I didn't think about how much pressure there would be, and about the inferiority complex (or imposter syndrome) it would cultivate in me.

OP, I also went to grad school because of Harry Potter.

Holy confirmation bias! Did folks all think that all profs would be Dumbledore? Perhaps the Defense Against Dark Arts Prof was a likely model for one's adviser: crazy/possessed, incompetent/narcissist, sincere and competent but split personality, quite good but with a hidden agenda, bureaucratic tyrant, or quite nasty but with a hidden agenda.

Well, all my professors do tell me that I look just like my father. Except for the eyes...I have my mother's eyes.

Yeah, the sorting hat really did me a disservice by putting me in theory.

When I started grad school, I thought I was the chosen one, like Harry. But now that I'm jobless I've come to realize I'm just a Neville Longbottom (why does this **** always have to happen to me?").

Harry Potter is overrated. Goonies is best.

I thought Neville was murdered by that giant (Haggerd or whatever) in the last book.
