I don't live in NOLA, but am concerned about gay rights so I investigated this a long time ago by actually contacting activists in NOLA. My investigation confirmed what Chris is saying. The boycott is **** and hurts a lot of us who live in the South. It is simply an excuse for those who are afraid of humid weather to skip APSA and make themselves believe that are a good person while doing so.

Chris,
I have a new hero. It is you. Thanks for speaking truth to Pinello's illusions.

Has anyone checked the names on the boycott list to see how many of them were likely to go to APSA in the first place? There's a 1st year grad student from my program on the list, and I know she didn't have the finding to travel to APSA.

^ Many, many folks who weren't going to go to APSA. Think Miami, etc.
Also, some folks who went to ISA in NOLA a year or two ago. I guess the weather isn't as unpleasant in winter. And it's ISA, so that's a fun conference!

^ Awesome idea. A list of APSA boycotters who went to ISA in New Orleans last year.
Here's proof that the same-sex marriage controversy was already a known issue during the 2010 ISA conference:

Here's the 2010 ISA program:

Here's the SPSA 2012 program (also taking place in New Orleans):

Here's the boycott list:

Does anyone know of any scripts that can do quick searches and compare the list of names?

At least one IR person who posts on PSJR went to ISA and signed the boycott.

^Now if only you had the temerity to name names...

I think it's sweet that Barney Frank will be giving the plenary address at APSA in NOLA. I guess the boycottards are boycotting the address given by a gay man. tsk, tsk

Just came across this or I would have responded to Zoinks months ago.
It is true that I signed the boycott, but now plan to attend in APSA in NO (and attended ISA).
I can't speak for others, but in my case the change in my position came from learning more about the issue. I am generally a strong supporter of LGBT rights and signed the petition as an expression of that support. After joining the APSA Council and learning more about the positions taken by local LGBT groups on the issue and learning more about APSA's response to the boycott and its siting policy (which you can check out here http://www.apsanet.org/content_73503.cfm), I decided that a boycott was not the most appropriate way to support LGBT rights in this case. As a result, I decided to attend APSA and removed my name from the boycott list. If you check Dan Pinello's link above, you will see that my name is no longer on the boycott list.
Maybe that means I learned something, or maybe that makes me a "flip-flopper" on this issue (in the proud tradition of Mitt Romney and John Kerry), but at least I don't have to run for reelection!

According to Pinello, that makes Duke less gay-friendly than it was a few months ago...

That's right, I'm not going to APSA in 2012, and I don't give my money to a state that discriminates. You seem to be OK with doing just the former. It's your right to keep funding a repression.
--But I'm sure you're all for Affirmative Action, right? Guess that's the "right kind" of discrimination. A-hole.

The boycott list is BS, by the way. My name is on it, and I never agreed to that. (I'm not going to APSA for unrelated reasons).

Anyone paying taxes to the state of Florida is helping the state enforce a Naz*i statute.

All due respect to Fettweis et al, the arguments here about ISA and the New Orleans HRC re beside the point. The boycott was of APSA (and their siting policy), not New Orleans. That said, Pinello is clearly the wrong guy to run such a thing.
Posted 11 months ago # -
So with the new siting policy, the boycott should end.
Posted 11 months ago # -
I would imagine that Pinello is as clueless running the boycott as he is with his "gay friendly" department ranking.

Uh, no, the boycott always was, and is, all about New Orleans. No other location was ever discussed. The siting policy that led to NOLA was in place for several years previous to NOLA's selection. Not sure why you feel compelled to make things up.

Piniello has a personal vendetta against NOLA. He once lived there. He hasn't lifted a finger to limit political science activities occurring in any other place (including those whose same-sex marriage laws are identical to NOLA).
This boycott is about Dan and NOLA. Beyond that, it represents a coalition between the perpetually disgruntled and the uninformed.

Another vote against Pinello's department ranking. I am confused as to how a department with a gay chair can qualify as having "No gay-and-lesbian friendly core faculty..."
Posted 11 months ago # -
Actually, if you read the text of the boycott, it has nothing to do with changing APSA's siting policy. So none of the signatories are boycotting for that reason alone. They signed a boycott based on gay policy in Louisiana.

Is there a **** in Pinello?

New Orleans seems like a nice city....and has faced many struggles. The boycott effort seems like a cruel slap in the face.
Posted 11 months ago # -
why NOLA 2011?
what happened last year?
I am going to NOLA 2012
Posted 11 months ago # -
yeah, ISA was in NOLA in 2010, not 2011

The question is: why not allow 3 men an 5 women marry as a unit?
or why not 3 straight men? or 3 lesbians and 2 straight men?what is magical about the number "2"?
and why should the state tell me what 'love' is? what if I wanna marry my straight best buddy, and I am straight too?

Well put!

gays are saying "lets not legislate morality. Allow gay marriage too."
then we should allow polygamy, marriage among straights of same gender, etc.why not?
