Every year, once grades are posted, and the souls of would-be lawyers have been duly crushed, we here at PSJR decide to **** with the board software.

Who knows why we do this? Maybe it is the fallout from our double secret holiday party, where we celebrate a holiday so new and cool that you have never heard of it. Or maybe it is the fact that at our party, we are drinking concoctions so cutting edge, that patents are granted and FDA and/or DEA investigations are initiated for all of them.

In any event, the board will be receiving an upgrade soon, and I would like to know what sorts of features everyone would like to see. None of us knows how to program anything more than a TI-85 so try to be realistic with the requests.

    word to your mother,

Agree regarding a code posted below each user name that identifies them in that thread (a la EJMR). It doesn't work great with sites like anonymouse, but it would still be useful.

A good/no good would be nice too. Allow swearing. I'm sick of looking up the code for f, p, etc.

No unique identifiers. It's been tried, and the board dried up. Good / no good would be nice, though.

Required usernames. So be it if the board dries up. At this point you get 97% crap, BS, and nasty comments. I'd rather cut 97% of posts and just have the 3% that actually carry info.

Seriously, we already tried that. It sucked. Plus the vitriol actually got worse other places.

    And BTW nobody posted info.

I actually preferred the required-registration system. It increases the cost to posting on PSJR. I actually posted the same amount because my desire to post certain things is very high (I'm a regular troll, and I attack my classmates whose job market success I'm quite jealous of). I also have a lot of free time because I still don't have any interviews yet. And yet, the required registration causes others to post less, which means that my posts gain prominence on PSJR because there are fewer other posters to compete against.

I was wondering whether the mods could add a separate thread that would allow posts only from .edu accounts. Everyone could read the posts, but only .edu accounts could post.

It would be a nice way to see if there could a sustained, civil discussion involving .edu accounts. For now we could have only one thread, but who knows if it picks up then we could add more.

    Thoughts?

Threaded conversations so it is clear who is responding to whom. Similar to Reddit.

I agree with ^^^^. If the original poster could decide whether to allow only .edu (or only registered user) responses it would get rid of some of the annoying responses to serious questions.

There have been times when I've wanted a serious response and the thread has quickly deteriorated to the point where no serious respondent would post. If the original poster could prohibit non-registered users from posting, some serious inquiries might be more likely to be answered

I think we should add the Good No Good buttons like over in Econ. It might be useful for mods too.

We should have an ILP/no ILP button. People could vote o which posts are the most ILPish.

It is 10:30 eastern time on Monday morning in the middle of job season. 22 of the 30 threads on the front page of PSJR are spam (and probably 4 of the remaining 8 are trolls). At this point, it seems clear that the current system for deterring spam bots is failing. Can we try something else?
