I know this bc I am in the department. Gtown has been revamping its department for more than a decade and theory is one area they think they will be excelling at. They recently hired Boyd and with Mitchell and Douglass they have a formidable core in history of political thought. If you don't to do HPT you should not go to Georgetown. They are at a great crossroads and have really fought to hold to their qualitative bent. With daneen and schall leaving, they will lose their focus on political theology and strengthen their faculty in ancients, renaissance, and early modern period. I wish they could bring in melissa Lane from Princeton to teach the Greeks Along with Michael gillespie from Duke. That would meke for an amazing group of scholars.

yea Gtown seems like it could be a great place for Theory. They need to expand a bit more, have more breadth.

Douglass hasn't published anything for decades, and never a book as far as I know. He works with students who are more focused on contemporary political thought, so he's a good balance to Georgetown's real strength in HPT. He runs a great theory methods seminar that theorists must take.

^ Not necessarily. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only theorist who paid attention in methods seminars when we learned about stuff like sample size. If their last half dozen or so candidates struck out, that may mean the training is bad. Or, it may be a run of random bad luck. Don't underestimate the amount of randomness in life.

Yes they are looking for more people, at least two, other than schwartzberg. One will definitely be working on ancient greek political philosophy (plato/aristotle). As far as breadth, they are not really concerned with covering everything just excelling in the areas which fits with their vision. That is expanding their expertise in HPT and possibly developing a firm footing in comparative Political Theory.
in general they are very critical of academia focusing on theories of Justice and contemporary theory. Georgetown is one of the only places left which emphasizes textual and contextual reading of the canons. Some in the faculty want to expand this focus beyond just the Western Classics, thus the enthusiasm about CPT.
So, happily, Simmel/onan's brand of critical/pomo crap hasn't got a hope at Gtown. I am reassured.
Who is interested in CPT there? I know Mitchell was in Iraq for a while, but has that changed the direction of his work?

Mitchell and Douglass are leading the charge on CPT as in they are very interested and want to bring in colleagues that can establish Gtown as an intellectual center for CPT. I think what interested them in MS is her way of thinking of looking at the ancients to find explanations for the present an also I feel like her interest in Rousseau aligns well with that of the faculty who place alot of emphasis on his thought (in addition to Tocqueville). You have to remember that basically out of an original 6 they will have lost 3 by the start of next year ( Daneen, shall, Mara) and so that leaves Mitchell, Douglass, and Boyd with a great opportunity to bring in the type of people they want to really evolve the program. I have a feeling Boyd was resp for bringing in MS. I wish they could also get people like Lane and Gillespie but I doubt that would happen.
What exactly are we talking about with CPT? What Euben does?
Mara is not retiring he has recently become the Dean of the Graduate School(he was previously Associate Dean). He probably will continue teaching one or two courses per year. Shaall is quite old and not in good health. He will be missed as a great teacher.
