Yes, UCSD did have a good year, given its historical average. Congrats to everyone who landed well, and best of luck to those who are still looking.

Wild guess #1: 75% of posters here are 1st-2nd years wasting more time than they probably should.
Wild guess #2: Most have an overly narrow definition of "placement," i.e., the one preached by their low self-esteem advisors.
Wild guess #3: Most will reply to this post with vile, anger, and an insatiable need for attention.

But Berkeley has a large pool, perhaps even bigger than UCSD?
Posted 1 year ago # -
USCD has a large pool? It's a smaller department than many of the others mentioned above.

whoa, ok. If we're going by % of the total number of placement candidates that were successfully placed, then we have to re-think things a bit.
- UCSD and Stanford placed really well
- Harvard and Berkeley placed marginally better than Columbia, which placed marginally better than Princeton (sorry, "three TT theorists")
- Yale did worse than all four, as did NYU
- UCLA, Rochester, Michigan, Chicago etc still struck outPosted 1 year ago # -
Hiariously, the UCSD students on here think that is a banner year -- and it is a banner year for UCSD.
Why is it hilarious that UCSD students hold a belief that is accurate?
Posted 1 year ago # -
Geez I had completely forgotten about Michigan. That shows how poorly they did this year.
Posted 1 year ago # -
^ shocking, isn't it? Also, NYU...remember them?
Posted 1 year ago # -
So how about departments outside of the top 10, such as the rest of the top 25? If all hope lost this year, or are some doing o.k.?

Why the skepticism about the Princeton theory placements?
Sam Arnold -- TCU
Javier Hidalgo -- University of Richmond (Jepson)

If you're white, it's all right.
If you're brown, stick around.
If you're black, get back get back get back.Posted 1 year ago # -
^^ So Princeton placed one person at Harvard, one person at TCU, and two people at the University of Richmond? That's *by far* worse placement than this year at Harvard, Berkeley, Stanford, UCSD, Columbia, etc.
Sorry, bro.

I think the hilarious thing about UCSD is not that the belief is accurate, but that they think it's great when it's really ordinary-weak compared to other programs.
Their cohort sizes are not much different from UCLA or Berkeley anymore, by the way.

Wustl did well.

Add Rutgers and Toronto for Princeton, according to their placement page.

I go to Michigan, and I find nothing hilarious about UCSD's placement this year. Wish people here got those jobs. OP asked which depts had the best placements this year, and UCSD is clearly among them.
Probably just a bunch of Berkeley people posting on here who can't handle the fact that Berkeley and UCSD are equally good at this point. Get over yourselves. Times change.

^ This. The attitude some people have toward UCSD reminds me of how people in the Ivy League still look down on Stanford because Stanford is relatively new. This also applies to NYU, although I guess they didn't place very well this year.
Posted 1 year ago # -
And on comparing UCSD with Stanford and Harvard: let's not forget that UCSD has much less money, so it can't soak its students in resources and probably loses out on the best students (to whom it can't offer the most competitive packages) so there are selection effects. By this metric, it is doing as well with much less.
On the other hand, one year is just one year.

I just looked up pissing match in a dictionary and found a link to this thread.
Posted 1 year ago # -
what's the deal with Yale? they changed their curriculum and brought in a placement director 6 years ago, so in theory the students coming on the market now should be doing better than the school has been in the past few years. true or false?
Posted 1 year ago # -
^ no real pissing match. Just a department, USCD, with a chip on its shoulder.
not sure why.
Posted 1 year ago # -
^ I wouldn't assume that people from there are the ones posting on here. It's just as likely to be haters from other depts.

Is Duke just not part of the conversation anymore?
Posted 1 year ago # -
Anyone from Emory, Davis, TAMU, Minnesota or Ohio State place this year? Seems like a lot of the middle tier schools did particularly poor.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Seems to me the people attacking UCSD are the ones with a chip on their shoulder.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Princeton placed an ABD theorist at Harvard (McClendon), according to the wiki. Does that count as two?
Posted 1 year ago # -
^^^Add UNC, Duke, Vandy, Wisc-Mad to that list
Posted 1 year ago # -
Princeton also placed in IR at U of Toronto. Your data sets are superficial...
Posted 1 year ago # -
And another IR for Princeton at Pittsburg. Thats six so far without paying attention to CP and AP.
Posted 1 year ago # -
UNC placed pretty well this year
