I have a crappy paper and no pubs. What's the worst journal that won't hurt me on the job market? I'm looking at R1s in the fall.

If you have no publications, maybe you should be looking beyond R1s in the fall. Also, if you write crappy papers, you probably won't get a job at all, much less at an R1.
Plus, how would you expect anyone to help you without at least knowing at least the subfield, if not the general topic of the paper?

It's American.

Social Science Journal

As an IR person that has served on many committees for American, I can gather that the Forum, Political Methodologist, and Presidential Studies Quarterly are on the lowest of the low tier in the field, but still considered 'peer reviewed' publications. I am sure I am forgetting others. APR seems like CMPS, difficult to get into, respected in the field, but little external value. SSQ can be a very mixed bag, generally its a poor journal but it is unlikely to take non-race based stuff seriously.

"The Journal of Political Science"
"American Review of Politics"
"APSR"

TJPS is a good journal!

I'm the one that suggested Social Science Journal. Two points: (1) SSJ is not SSQ (which is much better if you can believe that), (2) The Political Methodologist (TPM) is a non-peer reviewed newsletter of the Section on Political Methodology. The latter contains mostly coding suggestions, small articles, and section news.

If somebody is an ABD with no pubs, how much better would somebody look with a solo-authored SSJ? Are there jobs (eg. R1's) where having no pubs would actually look better, because it looks like you are targeting the kind of journals they want you to publish in?
On the other hand, do a lot of places essentially reject applications without a single publication out of hand?

Much better, no, and yes.

Is there any data on turnaround times or acceptance rate in journals? Aside from tier 1s?

No and no.

You should target journals with names that will impress your family and friends but are actually pretty low grade:
Journal of Political Science
American Review of Politics
National Political Science Review
New England Journal of Political ScienceConsider buying a Rolecks too.

Rule Number 1: hiring departments/hiring committees always want candidates with evidence or potential of publishing in the same tier of journals or better as themselves (loosely defined with aggregation bias). Plan accordingly.

To be honest, I've often wondered if there's a point at which you should let a paper die rather than send it lower. This is probably a matter of opinion, but what do you think, PSJR?! Are there some outlets with negative value added? Is it better to remain unpublished and be thought a fool than to publish in the Journal of Crappy Research and remove all doubt?

So wrong on every count. The Fourm is not peer-reviewed, really. Political Methodologist is not a journal, and Presidential Studies Quarterly is not the lowest of the low by any stretch. It used to be much worse, but even then that wasn't true.

Its pretty bad if you make it into the Journal of Deviant Behavior

At what level would having a solo SSJ (and nothing else) strike you from consideration *on that basis alone*? Not at all? Top 100? Top 50? Top 20? Top 10? CHYMPS?

On a serious note, there might be a good reason to try a lower ranked journal if you're willing to bet it will move up rankings. Presidential Studies Quarterly is one example. Political Analysis is relatively new and I'm sure it was easier to have a paper accepted there ten years ago than today, which works out great for the folks who got in early. I don't know what they are, but I'm sure there are some journals that accept a high percentage of papers now but will become pretty exclusive in five-ten years and look better on a CV than they would tomorrow.

In today's market even a low ranked R1 can hire a top-30 ABD with multiple publications and a top-3 journal article. This thread is dumb.

And yet a fairly high percentage of ABDs are hired every year without pubs. At good schools, to boot.

The Journal of Democratic Peace is at the top of the best journals. You should send it there.

Prez. Studies Quarterly used to be horrible, but it has gotten MUCH better in the last 5-10 years. Some of the articles are by big name faculty or are very good.
It's definitely not the best, but it has gone from laughing stock to a solid subfield hit. If you study the presidency, you should publish there and it is taken very seriously.

What an utterly clueless comment. The first five words contain a vaguely non-wrong yet banal statement of fact, but it's downhill incredibly fast from there.

^^^ Gagnon is a fake. Journal of Democratic Theory is what you want - only 200 Euros for a quick review - 300 if you want 3 reviews! What a deal! What a man JPG is! An inspiration to us all.
"Another innovative feature of this journal is that it requires authors to provide a non-specialist explanation of his or her article in 800 words or less." (an abstract, in other words...)
"This Journal also practices a year end event (using a 'Western' calendar). We collectively review the papers that have been published and democratically decide which papers stand out the most (a trying affair as each publication is excellent). These few publications will then be nominated by this Journal for any awards and prizes (local through to international) for which they are eligible throughout the following year."
Wow, wow and wow!

200 euros is not too much for a peer reviewed publication if your tenure decision depends on that. it's very well worth it, actually.

^Oh cut it out Gagnon. You're a money-whore, nothing more.
