Got an email today, out of the blue, inviting me to submit a paper to a journal in my field. They had seen my MPSA paper and liked it. I'm assuming when a paper is invited peer review is just a formality, right?
Finishing up my third year, and I'm about to have my first publication. I don't know why everyone complains about MPSA--look at what it got me!

Congratulations, dude, let's celebrate! It was breakthrough day for me too: out of the blue I got an email requesting that I join the editorial board at the Beijing Law Review. A little learning about the law and the chinese and I'll be good to go!

In seriousness, OP, I'll assume you're not a troll and offer you some advice. No reputable journal would do this. At best, you tarnish your CV with a junk outlet. At worst, you throw away a paper that could develop into something meaningful.
The only time semi-invited peer-review articles happen is when a very senior person establishes a special issue on a theme. Sometimes those issues are quite good (e.g. the 2010 JEPOP on the 2008 election). Even then, they go through the same peer-review process, and you'll only be invited to submit if you're already a big deal. Otherwise, your invitation is likely worthless.

When I was in grad school, a legitimate journal (it's affiliated with an APSA section) contacted me and invited me to submit. I think they were trying to get more and better submissions. I did send them the paper, and it went through the standard review process. The review process was not a formality at all.
I'm happy to hear others have had good experiences with this. I told a couple of people in my cohort and they were really negative, so this is comforting.
It sounds like some of you are just jealous. Maybe you shouldn't have written your conference paper the night before it was due. I spent quality time on mine, and I'm glad I did.
Although I probably shouldn't count my chickens before they hatch. It does still have a double blind peer review process to go through, but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Sometimes respectable journals reach out to authors about conference papers to ask them to submit, for the reason suggested. The review process is the same as for any other submission.
^ Just to pile on here: this was several years ago, but I was invited to submit a paper from a Southern conference meeting to an edited volume when I was a grad student. The request was random; no one had talked to me about it at our panel or anything like that. I can understand the skepticism though, in this day of sketchy journals and identity theft scams.
I did send them the paper and it got published. Just an edited volume, but it was better than nothing for a not-very-good conference paper.

^^So did I for my first pub. It got in and I celebrated again. Especially after straight rejections from several worse journals.
Hey troll, former post-MPSA journal invitee here. Three things to be said. First, if it is an invitation from a legitimate journal you might take that as a sign that you can do better than them. I know International Interactions managed to get a very strong paper through such an invite and the paper very easily could have ended up in a much better journal. Being a grad student, though, the author took the sure thing... Second, be aware of sketchy "journals." I have received two invitations to submit after MPSA, and one of them was for a paper that I never even presented. The "editor" simply saw the paper title and contact information in the program. Third, if it is a legitimate journal you will still be going under the review process just as anyone else would. This might show potential leniency on the side of the editor but you will still need good reviews. Even invitations for special issues get rejected.

While I have never heard of a journal doing this type of solicitation, some presses--commercial academic ones--do this with regularity.
The Air and Space Power Journal sounds obviously made up. The email I got was from a journal legitimately in my field. I can't imagine there are that many Air and Space Power articles being presented at MPSA, are there?
