Questions for the crowds: I've been watching the (lack of) progress of my manuscript through a journal via Editorial Manager. It hadn't changed in over four months, but then the "Status Date" changed to present time. Does this mean that a review was finally submitted? "Current Status" still says "Under Review", so I imagine there are fewer than 2 or 3 reviews in. I'm just trying to figure out how the software works. Thanks.

I imagine that means you have one review in. When you have two reviews, either your paper will be rejected (if they are both bad) or your status will go to "Minimum Number of Required Reviews Complete." At that point, you won't know when you have three until the editor makes a decision and lets you know.

This is a useful thread - if the journals could post a key to explain the terms used in the status section that would be great. It makes perfect sense that "Minimum Number of Required Reviews Complete" means 2 reviews are in and there isn't enough negativity to reject; however, I would imagine that this could vary by journal.

Most of the settings in EM can be set by the staff. Minimum reviews is one of them, such that it could be 2, or 5 for that matter, depending on what exactly the editor wants the world to see. Additionally, the number can be set as a default for all manuscripts, or the staff can change it for each individual manuscript. While EM does signal the staff when that number of reviews is reached, it also tells the staff when any new reviews come in if the proper settings are applied.
To the OP, EM would not change status if a review was received unless the staff has altered the defaults. If you manuscript has been out 4 months, it is very unlikely this is the first review that was in. If there has been no change in status since submission, this was probably not the cause. The exception would be if the minimum number had been achieved which led the staff to change the number for you manuscript.
What is much more likely is that a new reviewer invitation was just sent out as a result of a failure of reviewers to return a review after the deadline, or because of a number of conflicting reviews.

OP here: thanks for the info. The journal makes decisions with 2 reviewers, and it does list when the minimum reviews are in, so it probably is the case that a new invite was sent out. Yikes, though. Four months and another reviewer request? Sigh.

^ Not necessarily. It may not have been passed on to the editor yet. I've been a reviewer on manuscripts that have *not* gotten an additional review but have sat at the status until the decision comes in.

Second poster here. I was referring to APSR, and I happen to be correct at least for them.

^Indeed. But your mileage may vary.

Anyone know what it means when the title of your manuscript has a "(Q)" after it? The status is "with editor". I assume this means "in the decision queue" or something like that? I wish there were some sort of key to help you figure this out!

I noticed the Q on mine yesterday too, and it shows Under Review, so I don't think it's a decision queue thing. Weird.

Q = Quantitative
F = Formal
I'm not sure about other letters.Posted 3 years ago # -
Thanks for the info. That's interesting the letters would indicate the methodological approach.

Is anyone else not able to see their AJPS submission in Editorial Manager? Under "Author Main Menu," all I see is a blank screen. Perhaps just a super passive way to reject me?

AJPS editorial manager is closed until Aug 15
Posted 2 years ago # -
Cool. I must have missed that somehow. Thanks!

To clarify, if a submission is designated as "Under Review" and a few months later the Status Date changes to yesterday, that means that the manuscript has gone out to an additional reviewer?

Is the current status still Under Review ?
Posted 2 years ago # -
yes

How hard is it to understand Editorial Manager? Work on other projects until you hear back.

6^ If the AJPS doesn't close until July 15th, why is the EM for AJPS already closed?
Posted 2 years ago # -
^ Maybe because that post was from ten months ago?

This thread is the zombie thread that takes a couple of steps, dies, and revives ten months later. When will it come back to life next?
