That sounds about right.
Mantena deserves it. Ochoa's work is not bad but not HYP level. When would she leave? Would be a big gain for another, lower-ranked dept.

Whenever another job came along.

Well, his [March's] work is great, and I def. think he ought to get tenure. But 3 APSR's and 1 OUP book is exceptionally good. I Don't know of any other cases.
I don't see why some people here consider Mantena's case a done deal while March' is "wait and see." March's record is superb, Mantena's is very good but not as impressive.
March's record deserves tenure at Yale for sure. It helps he's the only person doing Islamic PT in the entire US besides Euben. Top notch scholar.Posted 2 months ago # -
aw thanks for copying my work from the other thread :) im flattered.

The suspicion about March is that there's quantity there but not quality. He gets stuff published because he works on a hot topic, but its not clear that his approach to the topic, or scholarship on the topic will have a long-standing impact. Those are the concerns.

^ hit the nail on the head.
also LOL ^^
there are TONS of people doing working on islamic political theories in the United States, what a f***ing absurd (and vaguely offensive in its ignorance/assumption) claim. They are housed in history departments, middle east departments, philosophy departments, classics departments, and law schools.Posted 2 months ago # -
As I said, "In PT." Eueben and March are the only people in PT doing Islamic stuff.
Other people are too lazy or risk-averse to even learn a new language.
How many American PT people even speak 1 other language? I don't mean basic 'junior-year in Paris' French.Posted 2 months ago # -
How are you going to judge whether March's work is good or not? You probably don't speak or read Arabic and have no qualifications for it whatsoever. His work has been highly regarded by historian of the Middle East. I agree it isn't as penetrating as it could be, but it fills a big gap in PT.

Plus OUP, 3 APSRs, etc is on its face good for tenure at yale.
I also know some really eminent Mideast historians think very highly of his work.Posted 2 months ago # -
so wait... March gets a 'pat on the back' because American political theorists are lazy? he should get tenure because he's more or less reproducing in a department of political science other scholars' work? what?
The fact of the matter is that AM is not *contributing to Islamic Political Thought*, he's writing commentary and book reports on it for the ignorant audience in political science. Whether that's good enough for tenure or not, I don't know or care (Noah Feldman seems to have hopped on that bandwagon already, and to better results): just don't insinuate that that there are 2 people doing islamic political theory.

I know! And can you believe all those law professors who got tenure for summarizing work that economists were already doing and publishing it in law reviews?

Who?

I have no idea who those people are. From the outside, Only Euben and March exist.

There are very few people doing CPT (Comparative PT) and March is one of the big stars in Islamic PT. Ochoa is one in Latin American PT, and Mantena in Indian PT. Yale has a de facto top notch CPT "program" which is vastly underutilized and neglected.

I've heard a couple full profs say they think CPT is the 'next big thing' in the field....

^ If they said that, they were wrong.
