The Department of History, Philosophy, Political Science, and American Studies at the University of South Carolina Upstate invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship beginning in August of 2009; candidates seeking higher ranks may also be considered. Primary teaching responsibilities will be in the areas of public administration (specialty open) and American politics. The ability to teach courses in the area of political institutions within American politics would be a plus. Faculty typically teach four classes per semester. The position has strong teaching emphasis, expectation of publications, and advisement responsibilities. Ph.D. required by time of appointment; salary commensurate.
USC Upstate (www.uscupstate.edu) is a comprehensive public university, located between Charlotte and Atlanta. We have a student population of approximately 4500 which is growing rapidly along with our region. The metropolitan area has a population of approximately 1.2 million. Spartanburg is in the upstate region of South Carolina, about an hour’s drive from the Blue Ridge Mountains and four hour’s drive from the coast.

That's a rather liberal interpretation of the term "metropolitain area," but for someone who likes teaching and the great outdoors, it could be a great job. Really nice access to lakes and the Blue Ridge.

The Census defines what "metropolitan area" is in the United States, as similar agencies do for every other country. Here, a metro area must have a core urban area with at least 50,000 residents. This area of SC meets that definition. No need to be snarky about it.
