I've been research active in about five different fields, and I have never seen a field so self-congratulatory and supportive as repression/violence studies. It's great in one sense, but the more I read in this field, the more I think that there are no gatekeepers. The vast majority of these studies just suck. How do they get away with it? Is it because only a few schools produce the grad students, and they all get along?

A couple of facts. Moore and Davenport are best friends who never publish together. They review each other all the time according to one of Davenport's students. FSU students get passes at JCR now. Moore lauds Davenport's student everywhere he can. Win, win, win. Now the big question: name one contribution made by the FSUers.

Someone is showing a vast amount of ignorance. First, Moore and Davenport have published together. Second, "friends" in the field often review others work. Once you start working in a recent agenda with a group of scholars you will all review one another's work, and often you will have read it all before. Third, no one is getting a "pass at JCR." That's just horsesh*t from a jealous asshat that just got their manuscript rejected by JCR. Bitter grapes.
If you think that the success of Moore's students is based on surreptitiously getting junk published in JCR you might want to ask why they are so easily able to land jobs at good schools. Or maybe the conspiracy is vast and Will has just duped tens of search committees over the past few years. Yeah, that's the simplest explanation.

Who are these people? Moore? Davenport? Never heard of em.

^^There's definitely a little repression mafia going on. Merced and Georgia = good schools? Ok, sure, if that's what you think. His students are probably under-placed given their publications.
