A "stellar" record, according to the TAMU 'Big 3/5' rule, would have been: "1 AJPS, 2 APSRs, 1 JOP" (some single author, some co-authored;) plus say one Chicago UP book.
(The Georgia PhD guy comes nowhere close to that. He has a very solid record and yes it is better than the UCLA guy's but does NOT fit the "TAMU Rule" criteria).
I guess this is the job market for making those kinds of demands. There is, as Marx might put it, a "reserve army of labor" eager and willing to do almost anything to get a job and tenure. R1 institutions have always seen junior faculty (all faculty) as replaceable parts in a publishing machine, but things are getting worse and worse. TAMU is not alone

You people don't know what the hell you are talking about. Unless you are from TAMU or have been there you really don't know what is required for tenure. The rest is heresay. And ALL departments make exceptions when they really want to tenure someone. There isn't a single department that has the exact same standard for each tenure case. That's ridiculous. You are all ridiculous. And most top tier departments want evidence that you can publish big ideas in the top tier journals or academic presses. TAMU is not alone in this standard. If you can't muster something in a top press then you deserve to be at your SLAC or lower tier institution. You are playing an entirely different ball game. There are those of us in the major leagues and those of you in AAA, AA, and A ball.

J-guy got screwed because he actually LISTENED to the "Big3/big5" "RULE" that the TAMU Politburo demands.
He aimed for publications at the big 3 journals and at one of the big 5 UP's, but was only able to get 1 hit.
on the other hand, the Georgia guy shatt on the "Rule" and decided to NOT publish in any of the Big3/Big5 and in the end got tons of non-blue-chip hits and 1 co-authored forthcoming top journal article and was called the most brilliant hire ever by the dept.
Lesson: do NOT listen to what TAMU senior people say.
Georgia guy isn't tenured yet. And he is a good hire, and does interesting work.
