Which is the better program? Which has better placement?

UNC is pedastrian reg monkeys who rely on COW and MIDS and publish in JCR. At Duke, we write books, publish in the top 3, and get large research grants to gather our own data that actually speaks to the questions we are interested in answering. So choose your own adventure.

I agree with this statement.

I would feel shameful if I had to go to conferences with a public university on my name tag. Duke is something you can be proud of and show off. Just my 2cents.

Both are in the South, which is a huge selling point

OP, you should also be looking at Clemson and USC (South Carolina not to be confused with that liberal bastion of IR in the West).

duke? never heard of it.

Why not pick both?

Administrators are making surprise visits to classes at UNC to make sure they are actually meeting. True. Google it

Go to US News and see which one is ranked higher. Problem solved.

UNC is better at IPE. Certainly Duke is better all around but it is a bit top heavy with no junior faculty. They just hired Beardsley who seems to do quite fine with MIDs and COW. Go ahead and reinvent the wheel if you want, not sure where all this funding is coming from since NSF keeps cutting.

We really haven't had enough time with events data (only since the 1960s) to draw any reasonable conclusions about its value. We should continue creating more of these large scale data sets because someday one of them might actually provide useful insights.

Both are solid programs that benefit from each other (both bring speakers, you can take classes at both, etc.). Of course, if you're consulting PSJR for advice on where to go, you're probably going to be dipsh*t deadweight at either program. My advice: go to Alabama for your MBA.

Event history data are fine for adding yet another interaction and publishing in JCR or ISQ.

You would fit in great with Duke. Go there.

Events data are good practice for grad students, but eventually scholars grow up and quit using it

COW data is like a prostitute. It's cheap, easy to use, and gets the job done in a pinch. But there's really nothing sexy about it. It's not ground breaking love. It's kinda dirty and you should feel bad afterward.

And you get crabs.

I do feel dirty after running the COW MIDS or PTS data.

Look at the code book of these data sets. It feels like the crying game.

Go to Duke, but date women from UNC.
Posted 2 months ago # -
UNC ladies would never date the stuffy snobs nerds from Duke. Keep dreaming.

Duke graduate students are knobs

Go to Duke. This is a stupid question.
On a serious note, what exactly are you interested in (i.e. IPE, Theory, Democratization, etc.)?

^ might as well just give us your name

You could listen to the idiots here, or you could just visit both programs and see which one feels more comfortable. You'll be there for 5+ years, so even if the trolls here think one is better than the other, it won't matter if you hate the department, the culture, undergrads, the town, etc. In all honesty, you can't make a bad choice here. The placement records are fairly similar over the past couple of years and you'll receive great training at either.

Same placement. Similar training. UNC has cool people. Duke has graduate students that engage in excessive posturing and self-promotion of how cool their methods are. There's also potentially more r a p e at Duke. Potentially.

Just visit the damn schools or talk to people you know (like those who wrote your LoRs) and stop listening to the Duke and UNC students posting here.

just for the sake of bringing this convo back, which did you end up choosing?
Hopefully you made the right choice and went with DUKE!

My suitemate from Brevard was parading his spittle collection, a particularly nauseating mass of his oral waste that he kept in three 2-liter bottles above the door. My roommate spoke in a dialect from Edenton that barely passed for anything on our side of the language tree, and the only things I had to wear in the 105-degree weather were corduroy pants from my goofball private high school. Tripping over bricks, showing up for classes in rooms miles away from where the classes were taught and getting lost by the water tower, I might as well have had a huge placard wrapped around my neck that said “Oh so clueless” and a number to call in case anybody found me peeing in his yard.
But there was a time before that. I call it The Time When I Thought I Wanted to Go to Duke.
