Is there anyone in American politics at Harvard worth studying with besides Ansolobehere? Doesn't seem like they have anyone left making major contributions to American politics. Just methods geeks and people that write **** books.

No, there isn't. I mean, I guess Snyder, but he does all his work with Ansolabehere anyway so what's the difference. Harvard hasn't been leading edge in American for quite some time.

You can add Putnam and King and the junior folks, but these are the only people worth studying unless you are doing methods. Harvard is fairly weak.
Stephen Ansolabehere
Daniel Carpenter
Jennifer Hochschild
Kenneth Shepsle
James SnyderPosted 2 months ago # -
there is no love for Skocpol on this site. She's done more than Shepsle in recent years.

Shepsle is done. Hochschild is good for REP and social policy. Carpenter is good at what he does but very very narrow, could not even be useful on a committee about any institution other than bureaucracy, and has he ever advised a student there?

so it's worse than we imagined

besides Stanford, who else would you put ahead of Harvard in American?

10-15 places.

Princeton, Berkeley, UCLA, Columbia. Quite honestly, maybe Vanderbilt.

This is old news. People have known this about Harvard since Fiorina left. Imagine what they were like pre- Ansolabehere/Snyder and post-Schickler.

^ Um, they were a lot like they are now, only minus Ans and Snyder?

For behavior I would rather send a student to UIUC than Harvard.

Harvard could have 0 Americanists and it would still be a better place to go than UIUC for an Americanist grad student.

UNC > Harvard in American

Harvard is "weak" in a number of subfields and yet routinely places grad students in those subfields very well.

While Snyder and Ansolabehere publish a lot of stuff together, it's still the case that most of their work is with other people. Snyder publishes with Hirano as much as Ansolabehere these days.

All their placements are from King. Very weak in American but old news

^ Eitan Hersh was an Ansolabehere student, now at Yale.

Harvard is always good. You will kill at the SLACs with a Harvard American.

inference from an N of 1. Good logic Harvard kid.

At least the Harvard kids admit their program is weak and cruise on reputation rather than merit.
