Why does Battle of Algiers seem boring to you? Showed it once students reacted well.

Why don't people actually TEACH? Is this really the state of American undergraduate training? Showing movies...

^ Who says the OP is in America?

^ Good point, but having studied and worked in the US and the UK I can tell you that showing movies in class is more of an American thing. Especially at SLACs.

OP: U are nuts
Battle of Algiers is not about terrorism, it is about a war of liberation from Western imperialism.
and Syriana and any of the stupid Clooney 'wannabe intellectual' movies is way more boringPosted 3 months ago # -
They show movies at R1's too, but more like "American Pie"

What may be lost on some of you is that viewing and discussing movies *is* teaching just as much as reading an article and discussing it is.

It is a half a$sed way to teach, but students love it so what's the harm?

It is only teaching if you are discussing American exceptionalism, which may be the case. I had a former colleague show five 2+ hour long videos on the Rwandan genocide in one 14 week semester (class only met 3 hours total each week). I think it is a sign of laziness.

Thanks for all your views on pedagogy. Now do you have any suggestions or not?

For responses to terrorism, you could show Taxi to the Dark Side

why do you call Battle of Algiers a movie about terrorism?!

is it because any movie about arabs is ergo terrorism related?

Why don't you teach them something that they may be useful to them if they decide to go to graduate school like Just War Theory or something that is actually academic in nature? I never show movies in class because I think students can go do that on their own time and half of the time they are on facebook, twitter, etc. while the movie is on.
