True, I could meet up with colleagues anywhere. But I'd prefer to do it in a great bar or restaurant than, say, Applebee's.
The MPSA. This is the end for sure

I go to something like three to four conferences a year and I think that I have seen maybe three or four papers presented that have had an impact on me or my work over a ten year period and half of those events were just spotting rising stars early (side question, are conferences like spring training in that we look for new stars but rarely ever see anything of consequence?). So no, the point is not to attend panels. All the good stuff happens away from the panels at the meetings, receptions, and meetups.

Hotels.com shows the Silversmith, double room (2 double beds) for 176.10 per night for Wed, Thurs, and Friday.
Or, I can pay $50 more for the MPSA rate.
THANKS MPSA!

Why can't the MPSA make childcare arrangements available? APSA and even ISA use Kiddie Corp...

Golden oldies.

MPSA is a shithole. It's run poorly and discourages attendees from actually doing anything more constructive than showing up for their own half-assed presentation (usually chaired by a grad student because MPSA can't manage that either).

All conferences are a giant waste of time. It's one of those things we do because we have to. Giant **** waste of time.

See, THIS is why you should actually go to panels. I will be chairing a panel entitled, "Game Theory, Heteronormativity, and the **** of Giants: A Classic Case of the Prisoner's Dilemma?" I expect to see you all there.

Networking is good. Finding others in your field is good. Seeing old friends pretty good. Paying to really get none of this is not.

I haven't been to the Midwest for several years (have gone to ISA, APSA, and a couple of regional conferences instead) but I remember it as a pretty good conference. Of course, I like Chicago, like my profession, and like interacting with other political scientists with common interests. That's why I go to conferences.
